Starting a Figma Project

This guide explains how to get started with the Nova Design System in Figma, both for internal designers and external collaborators. Nova is the central design system used across all products and teams within our organization. Adopting Nova is a prerequisite for all design work to ensure visual and functional consistency at scale.

Accessing the Nova Design Library

For Internal Designers

If you are part of the organization:

  • You are automatically granted access to the Nova Design Library through your organization's Figma account.
  • When creating a new Figma file:
    1. Open the Assets panel in the left sidebar.
    2. Ensure the Nova Library is toggled on.
      • It is enabled by default, but you can verify this manually if needed.

If you don’t have it

Click on the book icon on the top-right side of the assets panel, look for Nova, and add to the library.

Nova Library includes:

  • Components
  • Tokens and variables
  • Typography and iconography
  • A custom organization-wide font

Font Access

Internal users have access to the Nova font through their organization account. No additional steps are required.

Best Practices for Using Nova in Figma

To maintain consistency and flexibility across projects, follow these foundational practices:

  • Do not detach components. Nova components are built with flexibility in mind, using:
    • Slots
    • Partials
    • Variants
  • Use the predefined variables for spacing, color, and typography.
  • Avoid overriding component structures unless absolutely necessary.
